Fish breeding and fishing in the Autonomous Province of Trento are regulated by provincial byelaw n° 60 dated 12 December 1978 and its rules for implementation. This legislation has introduced some order into the subject by cancelling fishing rights held at one time by private individuals, societies and organisations, maintaining only those held by municipalities and the Magnifica Comunità di Fiemme and civic fishing rights. Fish breeding is based on local species that live and breed spontaneously in free waters and mainly concerns fish of the Salmonidae family: in particular, marble trout, brown trout, lake trout, grayling, Arctic char and European whitefish. The Province and Fishing Associations contribute to regulating fishing, each with different, complementary roles. The role of the Province is to decide on policy and scheduling, provide advice and economic support and regulate the activities of Associations, including surveillance, and to directly manage activities of interest to the Province: these activities come under the Fauna Department, Forestry and Fauna services, and are aided by local Forestry offices.
