Fish species

The running waters of Trentino, mainly inhabited by trout, can be placed in the "brown trout zone" which includes the streams and creeks close to the sources, and in the "marble trout and grayling zone" represented by the main rivers: Adige, Noce, Avisio, Sarca, Chiese, Brenta and main tributaries. In high mountain streams, brown trout is the most common fish species, often the only one. Some streams also host acclimated strains of rainbow and brook trout. Further downstream, as the waterways widen, the number of species increases: brown trout gradually gives way to marble trout and grayling. In addition to salmonids, the common bullhead, a small benthic fish that indicates good water quality and is often preyed upon by trout, and the minnow, a cyprinid fish that prefers cool, flowing waters, are also common, along with the common roach and the common barbel. Downstream, where the water warms more in summer, barbel and chub are also found. In the lakes of Trentino, the wide variety of lake environments offers suitable habitats for all species found in flowing waters, with the sole exception of the common barbel. Additionally, Arctic char (in high-altitude lakes), common carp (in Lake Garda), common whitefish, pike, and other species belonging primarily to the cyprinid (carp, tench, bleak, etc.) and percid (perch) families are found.
